Maintaining Artificial Turf in the Pacific Northwest

Artificial turf eliminates mowing, watering, fertilizing, aerating, and reseeding. What it asks in return is modest, but the Pacific Northwest adds one item that drier regions don't have to think about.

The One That's Specific to Us: Organic Debris

Nothing grows up through properly installed turf. But moss and algae can grow on it, not on the fibers themselves, but in the layer of decomposing leaves, fir needles, and dust that accumulates if debris is left to sit through a wet winter. Deep shade and north-facing yards are most susceptible.

The prevention is simply blowing or raking the surface a few times through the fall. Ten minutes with a leaf blower, several times between October and December, prevents essentially all of it. If a lawn has been neglected and moss has established, it's cleanable (a proper power brooming and treatment brings it back), but staying ahead of it is far easier.

Rinsing

An occasional hose-down clears dust and pollen and freshens the surface. In Portland, rainfall does most of this for you. Pet areas benefit from more deliberate rinsing during dry stretches when rain isn't flushing the system.

Cross-Brushing

Over time, foot traffic lays blades over along the paths people actually walk. Brushing against the grain with a stiff synthetic-bristle broom stands them back up and redistributes infill. Once or twice a year is plenty for most lawns; high-traffic areas benefit from more.

Never use a metal-bristle brush. It damages the fibers.

Infill Top-Ups

Infill migrates gradually with traffic and heavy rain. Every few years, topping it up restores blade support and, on putting greens, restores the roll speed. It's inexpensive and makes an aging lawn look considerably newer.

Pet Areas

Spills and Stains

Most things rinse off with water and mild dish soap. Turf is far more stain-resistant than carpet and far more forgiving than natural grass, which simply dies where something is spilled on it.

What Not to Do

Skip pressure washers on a high setting, metal brushes, harsh solvents, and anything with a flame, barbecues and fire pits need a hard-surface pad beneath them.
