Pet turf is a genuinely different product from a landscape lawn, and installing the wrong one is the most common mistake we're called in to fix. A proper pet system uses a fully permeable or maximum-flow backing rated for far higher throughput than standard turf, so urine passes through immediately instead of pooling in the backing. Underneath, we build the base with clean open-graded aggregate (no fines that would clog with organic matter) and we often add a dedicated drainage layer or outlet. The infill is zeolite rather than plain silica sand: it's a natural mineral that captures and holds ammonia from urine until rainfall or a rinse releases and flushes it, which is the actual mechanism behind odor control.
