Playground turf is the one application where what's underneath is a safety system, not just a base. Oregon Artificial Turf installs certified playground surfacing for backyard play structures, schools, childcare centers, churches, and park and HOA play areas across the Portland metro, built around a shock-absorbing pad tested to a specific critical fall height for the equipment it sits beneath.

The standard that governs this is ASTM F1292, which measures how much impact a surface absorbs from a given fall height. Every piece of play equipment has a fall height determined by its highest accessible platform, and the surfacing under it has to be rated to at least that height. We specify a closed-cell shock pad thickness matched to your equipment, install it over a properly compacted and drained base, and lay a soft, non-abrasive turf face over the top. The result is a surface that's measurably safer than the loose fill it replaces, and unlike bark or engineered wood fiber, it doesn't displace out of the fall zone exactly where it's needed most.
