Does Artificial Turf Actually Drain in Portland's Rain?

It's the first question almost every Portland homeowner asks, and it deserves a real answer rather than a marketing one: yes, artificial turf drains (often better than the lawn it replaced), but only if the system underneath it was built for it.

The Turf Itself Is the Easy Part

Modern turf backings are either hole-punched at regular intervals or fully permeable across the whole sheet. Flow rates are high, commonly well over thirty inches per hour and much higher for pet-specific products. Portland's heaviest downpours don't come close to overwhelming that. The turf is essentially never the bottleneck.

The Base Is Where It's Won or Lost

Water passes through the backing in seconds, and then it has to go somewhere. That somewhere is the aggregate base, and this is where installations succeed or fail.

Open-graded crushed rock (angular stone with the fine particles screened out) has substantial void space between the stones. Water moves through it freely and it stays structurally stable when saturated. A base built with a fine-heavy aggregate, by contrast, packs tight and holds water like a sponge.

Then There's Our Clay

Much of the Portland metro sits on clay-heavy soil that percolates very slowly. If water passes through the turf, moves through the base, and then hits a clay subgrade that won't accept it, it perches at that interface. A base sitting in standing water through a long wet season pumps and settles unevenly, and that shows up on the surface as ripples and low spots.

The fix is drainage design: French drains within the base, a piped outlet to a drywell or an appropriate discharge point, and a finished grade that falls gently toward it. On some lots this is straightforward. On others it's the most involved part of the project, and it's why we walk the site and look at where water currently goes before quoting anything.

What This Means When You're Comparing Quotes

Ask every bidder three questions: how deep are you excavating, what aggregate are you using, and where does the water go? A contractor who has thought about your site will answer specifically. One who hasn't will answer generally. The turf products available to all of us are broadly similar; the base is where the actual difference in quality and price lives.
