What Artificial Turf Costs in Portland: and What Drives the Price

Turf pricing is frustratingly opaque online, largely because national sites quote national averages that don't reflect what anything costs here. Here's a direct look at Portland-area numbers and what moves them.
The Range
A standard synthetic lawn in the Portland metro runs about $17 to $21 per square foot, fully installed. Pet turf, putting greens, and playground surfacing sit on their own ranges, because the turf, backing, and infill specifications all change. Whatever the project type, small or complicated jobs run higher per square foot, because fixed costs (mobilization, disposal, equipment) spread across less area. Large open installations run lower. Our cost estimator will put you in the right ballpark for each project type.
What Actually Drives Your Number
Turf specification. Face weight, pile height, backing type, and warranty all move the material cost, and the spread between an entry-level landscape turf and a premium pet or putting product is significant.
Excavation and disposal. How much material comes out, and what it costs to haul away, varies enormously with depth and access. This is often the largest single labor line.
Drainage work. A lot that drains naturally needs a standard base. A lot with clay and a low spot needs French drains and an outlet. That difference can be thousands of dollars, and it's entirely site-specific.
Access. A yard reachable by a compact machine through a wide gate is dramatically cheaper to build than one where every yard of rock and every load of spoil moves by wheelbarrow through a house-side path. This surprises people more than anything else on the list.
Where Cheap Bids Get Cheap
A bid meaningfully below the range is almost always cutting the invisible parts: shallower excavation, aggregate with fines in it, compaction done in one pass instead of in lifts, no drainage design, staples through the face instead of glued seams, or a thinner turf with a shorter warranty. None of it is visible on the day the job finishes. All of it shows up within a few seasons.
