Is Artificial Turf a Good Idea in Rainy Portland? An Honest Assessment

We sell turf, so treat what follows accordingly. That said, sending someone down a path that's wrong for their yard helps nobody, so here's our honest read on where synthetic turf earns its cost in the Portland area and where it doesn't.

Where Turf Genuinely Wins Here

Shade. This is the strongest case in our region. Portland's mature Douglas firs and big-leaf maples create dense shade where turfgrass will never establish, no matter how much money and effort you throw at it. Turf doesn't care about light.

Dog yards. Nine months of rain plus paws equals mud, and no natural grass survives concentrated dog traffic in a wet climate. This is our most common installation for a reason.

Small urban yards. Close-in Portland lots often have back yards too small to justify owning a mower, and too shaded and compacted to grow well. Turf makes them usable.

Slopes and awkward areas. Anywhere that's difficult or dangerous to mow.

Putting greens. No natural alternative exists at residential scale.

Commercial and HOA common areas. Driven by maintenance budgets rather than aesthetics, and the math is usually clear.

Where We'd Tell You to Think Twice

Large open sunny lawns with good soil. If you have an acre of well-draining ground in full sun, grass grows well there and turf gets expensive fast at that scale.

If you actively enjoy lawn care. Some people genuinely like it. That's a real thing and turf takes it away.

Under heavy fruit or sap-dropping trees. Turf works, but you'll be cleaning it much more often than the average install. Worth knowing going in.

If you're moving in a year. Turf adds appeal for many buyers but isn't a reliable dollar-for-dollar return, and the payback is measured in years of avoided maintenance.

If the budget only covers a thin installation. An underbuilt turf lawn on a bad base will disappoint you within a few seasons. If the budget doesn't reach a properly built system, we'd rather you wait than install something that fails.

The Environmental Question, Fairly

Turf eliminates irrigation, mowing emissions, fertilizer, and pesticides. It's also a plastic product with a finite life and limited recycling infrastructure. Both of those are true simultaneously. In our climate the water-savings argument is genuinely weaker than it is in California (we're not in a chronic drought), so the honest case here rests on shade, mud, and maintenance rather than on water conservation.
