Backyard Putting Greens in Lake Oswego

Lake Oswego is where most of our custom green work happens, and the reason is partly the market and partly the trees. So much of the city sits under mature Douglas fir and cedar that a real putting surface was never an option in these yards; grass of any kind struggles, and bentgrass under that canopy is not a serious proposition. Nylon does not care. A green goes exactly where the shade is worst.

Typically $20 to $30 per square foot installed in Lake Oswego. Run your numbers.

Lake Oswego Conditions

What changes about backyard putting greens in Lake Oswego

The work here skews toward multi-cup layouts with genuine contouring, fringe collars, and a chipping approach, rather than a flat square of short turf. Several of the greens we have built in First Addition and Mountain Park are integrated with an existing patio or pool surround, which means the edge detail against the hardscape is as much of the job as the putting surface. Many neighbourhoods carry HOA design standards, and we are comfortable documenting specifications for board review.

How we build it here

Shade is the reason, not the obstacle

Mature conifers make real turfgrass impossible across much of Lake Oswego. A nylon putting surface performs identically in deep shade and full sun.

Contour, not a flat rectangle

The base is shaped before the surface goes down. Break and fall are built into the sub-base, which is why a green that was poured flat can never be made to read properly later.

Integration with existing hardscape

Greens here frequently abut a patio or pool deck. The transition detail is where a premium install visibly separates from a cheap one.

HOA documentation

We supply manufacturer specifications and physical samples so a board is reviewing a product rather than a description.

Backyard Putting Greens in Lake Oswego, answered

Will a putting green work under the conifers in my Lake Oswego yard?+
That is one of the better reasons to build one. The nylon fibre used on a putting surface is unaffected by shade, so the part of the yard where nothing has ever grown is often the ideal location. The only shade-related consideration is debris: needle drop collects on a green and needs blowing off, because anything sitting on the surface affects roll.
How fast will the green be?+
Speed comes from infill depth and brushing, not from the turf you choose, which means it is adjustable after installation. We typically set up between nine and eleven on the stimpmeter, which suits most home practice. If you want it quicker we reduce infill and brush more often; the tradeoff is slightly more maintenance.
Can you build in real break?+
Yes, and it has to be done in the base. Contour is shaped into the compacted sub-base before the surface goes on, so the breaks are physical rather than cosmetic. This is the thing you cannot retrofit, which is why it is worth deciding on the layout before we excavate.
